Frozen shoulder or adhesive capsulitis is a condition that can occur spontaneously or following an injury, no matter how severe. It is when the normally flexible mobile shoulder capsule, (the sheath around the joint) becomes scarred and tethered, thereby limiting the available movement range. The cause of the condition is unknown and can come on gradually or suddenly. There are often stages of pain and stiffness in varying combinations. It is diagnosed by a decrease in range of movement of the shoulder in all directions with a specific pattern with or without pain. Ultrasound, X-ray and MRI may be helpful to rule out other causes.
Our Physiotherapists are highly experienced in treating frozen shoulder and will get you back to full recovery as quickly as possible.
Physiotherapy is often helpful to correct any contributing factors including poor posture, tight and or weak muscles, any neck or upper back contributions and encourage appropriate movement as the condition resolves. Some patients are helped by steroid injections, but not all respond. Often the condition spontaneously resolves over time, often around one to two years and exercises can be given to ensure proper shoulder and shoulder blade functioning during that time.
